BLUEBERRY PLANTS
Climax: Vaccinium ashei Zones 7 to 9
Early ripening, 2 year old, very good sized plants, with sweet-flavored, medium sized and medium blue colored berries, that occur in huge clusters for easy picking. This plant is one of the best for ease of picking and the amount of fruit. Most berries ripen in a concentrated amount of time. This allows for ease of preserving and freezing as well as fresh eating.
The five to six foot tall at maturity plant has an upright growth habit, with lovely bell shaped blossoms in the spring, intense green foliage and the gorgeous clusters of berries in the summer, brilliant fall foliage, and interesting shape and branch appearance for winter. This plant does very well, and is a favorite, in the South.
They would yield a small crop this year.

Rabbiteye varieties need two or more varieties to cross-pollinate. Climax and Premiere are good companions for pollinating, and for matching size of plants with a variation in fruit. Climax, with its smaller berries produces fruit that is best for cooking and baking. Premiere, with its larger berries produces fruit that is delicious for eating out of hand and putting fresh in fruit salads and on desserts.

Other Varieties:
We also have a few plants that are either Jersey or Blueray…not labeled, that are 2 year old North Carolina plants. These are Northern Highbush varieties. They are a good compliment to each other in regard to size of the plants and production of fruit.
Jersey is an old-fashioned gardening favorite that is a reliable producing plant. Small to medium sized sweet berries are best for muffins, pancakes, and other cooking and baking. The six to eight foot tall plants are upright with incredible orange autumn foliage.
Blueray is an early to mid season ripening plant, with large, firm, sweet berries. Large berries are best for using fresh for eating on breakfast cereal, in fruit salads, and on desserts. The four to six foot plants are vigorous, upright and wide, featuring bright red/yellow fall foliage.
They would yield a small crop this year.
They are $9.00 each.
We will probably have some other varieties available too. There are three main types of blueberries: Northern Highbush; Southern Highbush; and Southern Rabbiteye. All can be grown in our areas of Eastern Tennessee.
Generally, we have some of each type. From year to year, we focus on a particular type. We have blueberries available for late winter/early spring and autumn plantings, the best times of the year to do so.
They would yield a small crop this year, if you just cannot wait.
It is important for the future growth and production of the plants that you do not allow fruit to be produced the first year planted. You could pick a small crop from them this year. But it is better to pick off the blossoms when first formed. This makes the plant settle in better, and yields better in to the future. It is hard to resist letting the berries form…but it is much better for the plant, and your future crops of berries.
Like everything else in life, there are differing opinions as to whether or not it is necessary to pick the blossoms off the year that you plant your blueberry bushes. It is totally up to you whether you do this or not.
Blueberry plants yield healthy delicious fruit on plants that offer four season interest. They are a terrific asset to any size garden, from a patio to a farm.
